Decorating
Your Home with Oriental Rugs
“A carpet maker’s art contains all there is to know about
colour and its use”
-- Paul Gauguin
Decorating
with oriental area rugs is one of the easiest ways to revitalize,
update, improve and beautify any room in your home or office. Oriental
carpets can turn a drab room into one full of colour and excitement.
As a starting point or finishing touch, they blend wonderfully with
traditional, contemporary, formal or informal decorating styles. You
can use oriental carpets to create a focal point or to define an area
of interest, such as the space before the fireplace or the area behind
the sofa. Their legendary durability make them perfectly suited for
heavily traveled area. They can be used on virtually any surface, adding
warmth to otherwise cold tiles, over hardwood or even wall to wall carpeting.
The versatility and ease of moving area carpets allows you to make changes
with the seasons.
What is an Oriental Rug?
Oriental rugs exude beauty and quality. Browse through fifty years of
Architectural Digest, and you will find that oriental rugs are featured
in at least one home in every issue. Oriental rugs are timeless works
of art. But what exactly does the term “Oriental Rugs” mean?
Put simply, they are carpets that are hand-woven out of natural products
- most commonly wool, cotton, or silk. They are produced primarily in
the Near East to Central Asia. Oriental rugs are different from all
others in that their pile (usually wool) is hand tied to their foundations.
That is why they are referred to as hand - knotted carpets, and that,
more than anything, accounts for why they last so long – often
50 to 80 years in use. That also accounts for their expense. The knot
count in a square inch of an average carpet is something like 80. A
5 foot by 8 foot oriental carpet can take hundreds of hours to make.
Oriental Carpets are produced in Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, India, China,
Pakistan and a host of Asian countries. Each country produces its own
distinct style and quality of carpet. Making carpets by hand is an ancient
art, and the designs reflect religious and ethnic structures, found
in the history of the countries of origin.
How to choose Oriental Rugs for your home
To decorate with oriental rugs, it is important to take both color and
design into consideration. The colour should be compatible with other
colours in the room and may include shades of one or more of them. Dark
colours in a carpet bring the ceiling down, while light colours make
the ceiling seem higher. Very colourful carpets can bring a subdued
room to life, while simple designs and a limited colour palette are
better in a room that is already colourful and busy.
There are thousand of oriental carpets designs and when choosing one
consider how you are going to use the carpet. If the center of the carpet
is going to be highly visible a central medallion is a good choice.
If, however, the centre of the carpet is under a dining room table or
a bed, it would be better to choose one with an all-over design or one
where the most detail and interest is in the borders. Geometric and
straight line designs suggest country origins and work well in informal
interiors. Curvilinear designs are more appropriate in formal settings
such as a European – inspired interior. Contemporary designs run
from abstract to single–colour carpets and look great in modern
interiors. Another distinction you may make is between small-scale and
large-scale designs. Small scale designs call attention to the furniture
on them, while carpets with large-scale, dramatic designs call more
attention to themselves and become an important focal point in the interior.
Buying a Carpet
Purchasing a handmade carpet is not an easy experience. You may find
yourself dizzy with all the different colours and designs to choose
from. To ensure you make a fair purchase you should learn about oriental
carpets as much as possible. Take your time – do not buy under
pressure! Comparison shop – ask questions – See as many
carpets as possible in the size category of your choice. Make sure you
are dealing with a reputable dealer – You should be allowed to
take several carpets home to see how they fit in your surroundings.
Designing with oriental carpets is surprisingly easy. Essentially it’s
a matter of trying out the carpets at home until you find one that looks
great. Handmade carpets not only satisfy our artistic thirst and add
colour, warmth and elegance to a room, they are practical investments
– easy to care for and last for decades. One need not be an expert
to judge what looks good, and, in fact the most important thing is to
find a carpet that your really love. The final outcome is to be delighted
by the objects with which you have surrounded yourself.
