Penticton Downtown Reporter, June 2011

Teas & Weaves is the direct result of the combination of two passions of two people who love everything about the products that they carry. Claire Keys is passionate about tea while husband
Fritz Hollenbach is equally passionate about textiles, hence the name. It is, without a doubt, the most unique store you will find in downtown Penticton. Uniqueness is the key to the success of
Teas & Weaves, which was certainly the case in the Nanaimo Avenue location; however, in a recent move to Main Street that has increased one hundredfold. The new space is welcoming, inviting, and enveloping. Your eyes and senses will be stunned by the WOW factor as you are greeted by bold and bright wall colours; a beautiful hand built  wooden tea bar and shelving; the gallery of samovars; artwork from Burma, India, Vietnam, Morocco, and parts of Africa; as well as giftware that is different and constantly changing. Make sure to check out the most incredible light gallery!

Since a love of handcrafts and the value of human handwork is prevalent, check out the featured works of local weavers, potters, crafters, lavender growers—artisans all. For discerning tea lovers (and those who are up and coming), Claire has increased her repertoire of 75 teas to 150. You have choices of black, green, oolong, matcha, and white teas from around the globe. You have the opportunity to try a wide range of herbal teas as well as tisane teas or “fruit infusions” which contain no caffeine.

Tea tasting is encouraged, especially paired with locally made biscotti. And, if you don’t find what you want, then Claire will source it for you. You can also get creative by mixing and matching teas to make your perfect blend. And once you have done that, adjourn to the rug gallery that harbours a tea nook where you can rest, relax, and enjoy that perfect “cuppa.”

Inspired by Asian culture where teas and rugs go hand in hand, Teas & Weaves has a rug niche which is home to carpets of all sizes and styles. From Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, Russia, Pakistan, etc., they are hand crafted, hand knotted, and made of natural fibres. They are pieces of art as no two are alike nor are they uniform in every way. Since the ancient skills of carpet weaving is handed down through the  generations, having one in your home allows you to better understand the cultures of the people who made them and appreciate the time, effort, and creativity it took.

Prior to purchasing, it is recommended that you take one home to make sure it works for you.
